Why I’m Excited For Steam Frame

First off, the Steam Frame is Valve’s next generation headset that will be replacing the Valve Index, which itself was praised by a community of gamers and business owners. The Steam Frame is supposed to keep a good part of the index’s quality but also take some items a step further. The biggest issue with the Index was that it was wired. Meaning a PC is required, as well as power. It also featured a technology called outside in tracking, which means it used external light bases that shot lasers and identified the Index and its controllers using the bases. That technology while reliable, makes for more confinement and cables. The Steam Frame is inside out, meaning that everything is tracked from the headset to the outside world. It’s more portable, easier to use, and mostly seamless. The Steam Frame is supposed to keep all the good qualities of Index, including Valves hardware ethos “It’s your PC, we can’t tell you what to do with it”, but at the same time, do what made Oculus/Meta Quest 2 so great, standalone and ease of use. For the longest time I had a Quest 2 that I causally played on, but the link to Desktop was meh, and the performance for standalone was meeting its match right around the release of Quest 3. The Steam Frame is the Standalone that I appreciate, but it’s going to have an isolated Dongle for WIFI Streaming, AND valve also added for the ability to play any Steam game in a 2D environment, but depends on hardware performance, meaning that if I’m away from home, I could play some PC games straight on the device!
