DashFriend

What is DashFriend?

It’s your friendly neighborhood Dashboard! In all reality it is an Application that is meant to connect to your car using a Wireless OBD Adapter and send live data to the car, such as fuel level, MPH, the tachometer reading. The basic stuff you can find on your dashboard. However, there is also a lot of other data that CAN be sent through the adapter, but it depends on the vehicle.

What is the point of this?

Theoretically, there is a large amount of untapped potential that can be extracted out of the OBD Adapter. Some cars also don’t express the full potential of what they can offer. Some have a crappy way of showing it. Rather than being stuck with what your cars display has to offer, we can take the vehicles data and display what the user desires, how the user desires!

The issue with this application

Some vehicles don’t display certain things or hide them under proprietary data sets. This doesn’t make things impossible, but it does make a difficult task of making some features unavailable or use other means of getting the data. This is much more difficult than the OSFS project which is why this one is less developed. It will also take more time and understanding.

Features

  • Dashboard Mode
    • Shows selected gauges that are available to the vehicle. This will display as a gauge cluster but will be customizable to the users preference in what they want to see.
  • Tire Fill Assistant
    • For newer vehicles that already have a Tire Pressure Monitoring System. Opens a UI that shows each tires pressure and when the assistant is enabled. Device will vibrate when pressure is close and make a ringtone sound when the desired pressure is met. Meaning that you can turn on the assistant but leave your phone in your pocket.
  • Gas Log/Gas Assistant
    • Make a note of how much you pumped in gallons, and price, for later reference. There can also be a “How much gas do I need” for paying cash. There is a lot of little things that can be done to help with gas which makes the general gas assistant.
  • On Device Memory
    • Device takes last reading before disconnecting and remembers fuel level, odometer and other information that needs to be viewed offline.
  • App Lifetime MPG/LP100K
    • The app displays in a graph the lifetime consumption of the vehicle. It can only show since the app has been connected as data from before is impossible to retrieve.
